Rugby club pins down booze culture

07 Sep, 2009 10:01 AM
THERE will be little or no popping of corks or spraying of beer as Endeavour Hills Rugby Union Club celebrates becoming the 500th club in Victoria to reach the top level of the Australian Drug Foundation's Good Sports program.

The foundation says heavy use of alcohol at local, football, cricket, and rugby clubs has been identified as a threat to safety and a huge turn-off to parents wanting their children to play sport.

Concerned about off-field behaviour, the Endeavour Hills club set about changing its culture in 2002, says president Ashley White.

"We applied sensible changes to drinking and smoking behaviour at the club and we now consider these part of our culture. Our biggest challenge has been to advise visiting clubs that after-match drinking games are not part of the club's culture any more.

"Senior players are role models to younger players, who can now watch their older mentors celebrate with responsibility. Our culture is now one of family and welcome for our members and visitors."

Good Sport state manager Rod Glenn Smith praised the club for its initiative.

"This is an outstanding achievement for Endeavour Hills as well as for the state. The club is serious about addressing the heavy drinking culture too often associated with sport."

Smith said Victoria led the nation with the number of clubs involved in the program. With the end of the season approaching for many sports, he urged clubs to consider how they were going to conduct their end-of-season functions.

The Goods Sports program is a national initiative of the Australian Drug Foundation.

Clubs voluntarily register for the free program, progressing through three levels of accreditation over three years. They must work to retain their accreditation.
