Vaulting his way to the top

22 Jun, 2009 05:44 PM
NARRE Warren South gymnast Luke Wadsworth has come a long way since he started training on the vaults and pommel horse at the age of six.

This week's Journal Sports Star of the Week, Wadsworth won gold on the pommel horse at the Victorian Gymnastics championships last week and took out third overall in the men's artistic gymnastics.

His success includes finalling in the vault at the Australian Youth Olympics Festival held in Sydney in January.

But he said his major achievement was winning the nationals and being selected for the Australian team to compete in the Pacific Alliance Gymnastics Championships.

Now as the youngest member of the senior team, he will go on to compete for the national titles in Brisbane this month.

The gymnastic champion, who has won the state title four times and is a member of the Australian Gymnastic Squad, is working hard to maintain his top position on the national gymnastics circuit.

He has set his sights on competing in the Commonwealth Games, to be held in India, and the World Cup, to be

held in London next year.

"My ambition is to final in the World Cup and at the Commonwealth Games next year as I'm at my peak age. I need to come in the top six at the nationals to go into the second qualifier at the Australian Institute of Sport in August this year to be selected," he said.

Wadsworth competes in the men's artistic gymnastics, which includes floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and high bar.

He practises around 30 hours a week and trains for four to six hours a day, with two sessions on Wednesday and Friday at the Victorian High Performance Centre in Prahran.

He started gymnastics 12 years ago at the age of six at Endeavour Hills Gymnastics, before progressing to Grips International Gymnastics Dandenong. At 18, he is juggling his serious sport training with his final VCE year.

He says attending the Victorian College of the Arts allows him to fit in his academic timetable with training comfortably. The gruelling training, which he does six days a week, is all part of the job, he says.

"I only have Sundays off. But the thing I love about the sport is the massive adrenalin rush I get on the apparatus. It is a great experience to push your body to the limits," he said.
