SEVENTEEN-year-old Jessica Chamberlain is not only a netball champion, she is also a state champion in floorball.

After playing for the Pakenham team, the Royals, the Nar Nar Goon teenager represented Victoria in the national floorball competition in Canberra.

She played for the Melbourne Huskies Floorball team at the Australian Floorball Open last month.

"We made it to the semi-final, but unfortunately lost to the other Victorian women's team, the Victoria Venom, by one goal (4-5)."

Jessica enjoys playing floorball, the indoor team sport that is often referred to as floor hockey.

Developed in Sweden in the 1970s, fast-paced sport has limited physical contact.

"The basic idea of the sport is to get the ball into the net, past the goalkeeper, with the aid of the stick."

Jessica said although the sport was developed and was thriving in Europe, floorball was gaining popularity in Australia.

"We now have leagues close to home, including Pakenham, Keysborough and Melbourne."

After training to play with the Melbourne Huskies floorball team, she is now back playing round robin in tournaments at the YMCA in Pakenham.

"But once a week I play tournaments in Keysborough. My next competition will be playing in the Pakenham League."

But she has her sights on playing for Australia in international competitions next year.

"I'd love to play against European teams and China. At the end of this year selections will be made.

"It will be an awesome experience to play for Australia."

Jessica plays defence in both netball and floorball.

"I'm a shocking shot. I don't play forward because I'm so shocking, but I play defence well.

"With floorball I love the fact that we don't wear protection. I love the fast pace, there is always something happening, and I love the environment of floorball.

"There is an opportunity to go a long way with the sport."
