Dream run the second time

07 Sep, 2009 10:18 AM
IN 2007, Stuart Campbell was pipped at the post for cycling gold.

Last month, the Dandenong North resident made no mistake at the World Transplant Games, blitzing his opponents to take the top prize in the 20kilometre race.

Campbell, selected as Australia's cycling team captain, beat out Norway's top

rider and fellow Australian Matthew Spencer for the gold medal and a taste of the glory he had yearned for since the 2007 games.

At that games in Thailand, he took silver in the event, after he was pipped at the line.

Campbell, 32, needed a bone marrow transplant to fight leukaemia when he was 26.

The truck driver's never-say-die attitude has seen him get "back on the bike" and compete at the last two World Transplant Games, including this year's edition on the Gold Coast.

"The 20km cycle was the big one for me. I did the time trial the day before and I was sixth on that, which was no real surprise.

"I had set myself for the 20km race, and the competition was hot - there were about a dozen of us in a group at the finish line.

"I achieved what I wanted to do, it was a massive relief.

"Mum and Dad came up and my wife Tracy came as well. It's been a real family affair."

Just to show off his all-round abilities, Campbell snared swimming bronze in the 200m individual medley.
