Pep talk for the Rangers

23 Nov, 2009 05:25 PM
THE new Dandenong Rangers women's head coach has warned his players they are on the brink of a disastrous season and face the biggest challenge of their careers in turning it around.

A week into his role, Dean Kinsmen has been open and honest about his team's prospects, while hoping it serves as inspiration to the players who, despite showing signs of their potential in several games, haven't produced the form that would suggest he was wrong in his assessment.

The team sits second bottom on the WNBL ladder with a solitary win from eight games before Saturday's match against Perth. "The form we've have produced so far this season has been unacceptable and not up to our expectations, and we face what could be a disastrous season," Kinsman said,

"The next three games are at home and we will be looking to kickstart our season. We picked a group that we thought could athletically play in the league, which we can when we play at our best, but we don't have a lot of margin for error. That's probably our Achilles heel. We need consistency.

Former head coach Dale Waters stood aside for his close friend and assistant Kinsmen because of personal and work commitments but will stay on as assistant coach for the rest of the season.

Kinsmen said there wouldn't be any "great change" in the way he coached

"A lot of the concepts Dale and I have been working on and have built up over time, so there's not a great deal of difference in terms of what we are doing, but at 1-7, I'll be make making a few adjustments that will be part of an ongoing process."
