Time to take a stand

19 Oct, 2009 09:06 AM
NOT many Australians have the chance to walk the nation's corridors of power. But Berwick's Fiona Grech was given the opportunity to walk the walk - and she was able to talk the talk.

Fiona, an anti-poverty campaigner, was one of 270 people from across Australia given a chance to speak to the Federal Government about issues of global poverty.

The recent Voices for Justice event was aimed at highlighting the need for world leaders to fulfil their commitments to the Millennium Development Goals.

The goals were set out in 2000 at a United Nations meeting where countries from around the world joined to reduce extreme poverty.

At the time, Australia pledged international development assistance of 0.7 per cent of the national income - 70 cents in every one hundred dollars.

Since then, the Government has reduced the amount to 0.5 per cent of the national income.

Fiona says that while she is only one person, her efforts can make a difference in the long term.

"It's step by step, but the ultimate aim is convincing the government to act and hold up to their promise."

She says other countries involved have stood by their commitment, so she is hopeful the Australian Government will follow suit.

"The members of Parliament were very responsive

"You really experience the power of being an active constituent and know that you can be a part of making a difference."

LaTrobe MP Jason Wood says Fiona's work has helped to highlight the fact that globally millions of children die before their fifth birthday.

"We can change that. Children around the world should reach five years in good health, with basic education and promise for the future. Fiona is to be congratulated because she comes to Canberra to ensure we politicians keep these objectives strongly in our minds."
