IN THE past 25 years, Garfield resident Margaret Dobson has helped save the lives of hundreds of people she's never met.
But just knowing they are out there is enough to keep her coming back to the Red Cross mobile blood unit.
Next month she will make her 80th blood donation. "My blood group is Apositive, a more common blood grouping and one that is in demand," Margaret said. "It's the least I can do to give to the community, and would encourage anyone to do it."
As part of National Blood Donor Week last week, doctors called on Victorians to become donors.
The Australian Medical Association's Victorian president, Dr Harry Hemley, says donated blood, plasma and platelets save the lives of cancer sufferers, accident victims, burns patients, newborn babies and those undergoing surgery.
"One donation can save up to three lives, yet only one in 30 people donate blood. Many more Victorians can donate - most fit and healthy people up to the age of 70 are eligible."
"National Blood Donor Week is a good opportunity to register to become a regular blood donor or to learn more about the requirements."
