 Show your true colours

Show your true colours

Spring racing is more than just backing a winner, it's about looking the part. DANIELLE BUTCHER spoke with Westfield Fountain Gate stylist Lucy Kiraly about what's hot this season.

What are the most common fashion faux pas you see at the races?

We see far too many disco dresses - strapless or shoestring strap dresses with diamantes. These are appropriate for the nightclubs but certainly not the races. To create a look of day-time sophistication, ensure dress straps are at least one-inch wide.

What are the 'in' colours and styles this season?

Bold colours are big this season - the shops are awash with colour. The key is not to be afraid to contrast and clash the colours to really make a statement. In direct contrast are the blush nudes, which are also making a comeback. Nude hues work best when worn simultaneously with many different shades of pastel colours and then highlighted by one bright colour or metallic tone. And of course, black and white are a staple for the races - they're the perennial classics of the racing carnival.

What are the best additions to make an outfit your own?

Accessories all the way - this is really your chance to show your fashion stripes. Choose statement pieces like unique jewellery, a striking clutch, silk scarf, and of course you can never go wrong with a sensational pair of heels.

What about the males, how can they impress this season?

It's really key to find a well-fitting, well-cut suit. That's not to say it needs to be boring - experiment with flashes of colour and wear a fedora hat. Shoes must be polished.

What are your top five tips to pick a winning outfit this season?

- Choose a style and colour that suit your body shape and age.

- Don't overkill the accessories; have only one accent feature on an outfit. When in doubt, less is more.

- Choose accessories carefully and opt for pieces that work with your outfit.

- Wear the right clothing for the occasion.

- Be well groomed. Make sure your hair is tidy and your nails manicured.
