Ride in the name of research

29 Jun, 2009 11:41 AM
NARRE WARREN'S Paul Ferrier will be riding from North to South Vietnam in a bid to raise awareness and money for research into sudden infant death syndrome.

Next month, the case manager of pediatric orthopedic services at Southern Health will hold a charity Christmas in July dinner to raise more funds.

"I aim to raise $6000, but more would be a bonus."

But his greatest challenge is yet to come. He's been "training solidly" for the last six month to negotiate the steep hills in Vietnam effectively.

Mr Ferrier will be part of an eight-member team from Victoria planning to complete the 1000-kilometre ride in October.

"I believe it will be physically challenging because it's very hilly," he said.

A nurse by profession, he said that while he worked at the Monash Medical Centre he had seen countless babies come through and die of SIDS.

"I sympathise with the families involved. Because SIDS and Kids Victoria is a non-profit organisation and relies heavily on donations, I wanted to help.

"This is a great opportunity to help support these families suffering such dreadful losses."

Christmas in July will be held on July 24 from 7pm to midnight at The Ashwood, 61-63 High Street, Ashwood.
