MORE than 4000 people were treated to good weather, fashionable fillies and photo finishes at the Pakenham Cup last Sunday.
Organisers have lauded the event as one of the best in years with great success on and off the field.
Pakenham Racing Club sales and events manager Anthony Millican likened the attendance to that of last year.
"We had about 4000 people through the gates and that was a good turnout, about the same as last year.
"We had a glorious day weather-wise and a good day's racing."
Mr Millican said Fashions on the Field was a real drawcard.
"We had quite a few more entries than at last year's event."
"It was enjoyed by all involved."
Fine weather and sharply dressed competitors were no match for the $100,000 Devine Communities Pakenham Cup.
In-form apprentice jockey Jason Maskiell gave Blaze Adrift a dream run around the 1750-metre Pakenham Cup circuit, stalking his rivals from just off the speed to swamp them down the outside and take home the $61,000 first prize.
The Robbie Laing-trained gelding Xavier peaked on his run at the 100-metre mark, with Blaze Adrift driven home on the outside.
The Pakenham Journal Maiden Plate was won by The Last Judgement, ridden by Darren Gauci, with Bartender Bill second and From The Front third.
Pakenham trainer and Pakenham Trainers Association president Julien Welsh enjoyed success in front of his home crowd.
In race 8, Mark Falherty won on Very Fast and the last race was won by Welsh-trained Mightyblitz.
The club's next feature race day is the Devine Family Day on Saturday, May 8, followed by
Superjump Sunday on May 23.
Mr Millican said it could be the last time people had the chance to see jumps racing in Pakenham. "It will be a big day and maybe the last time people will see this great sport in this area."
