More hats in the state ring?

SPECULATION is building that several other Casey councillors are contemplating trying their luck at the state election.

With the exception of mayor Lorraine Wreford, who has already served eight years as a Casey councillor, all are first-term councillors elected 18 months ago.

Previous mayor Geoff Ablett, rumoured to be considering taking on Labor incumbent Jude Perera for the seat of Cranbourne as a Liberal candidate, said he was aware of speculation but declined to comment further.

Amanda Stapledon, also rumoured to be looking at standing for Cranbourne but as an independent, said:

"I am totally committed to my ward and my role as councillor for the City of Casey."

Cr Wreford, who is thought to be a possible Liberal candidate for Mordialloc, said while there had been a lot of speculation "most of it is misinformed and I have nothing to confirm".

Deputy mayor Shar Balmes denied suggestions she was eyeing the seat of Narre Warren North.

"I have no desire to be involved in politics at more than a local government level.

"That is where I want to be so I can serve my community in this capacity."
