BERWICK is home to a new one-stop justice service centre for the southern metropolitan region.
It will house a range of localised services including consumer affairs, dispute resolution, the Sheriff's office and Aboriginal and refugee programs.
The centre is the third of eight regional Department of Justice offices to open and is aimed at meeting the needs of the fast-growing Casey and Cardinia Shire regions.
At the launch last Thursday, the Parliamentary Secretary for Justice, Brian Tee, said the centre would provide local solutions to local problems.
He said statistics showed one in three Victorians were involved in a community dispute each year, usually calling on local MPs for help.
"Each community faces unique issues and having senior staff in the regions to respond to these issues quickly increases the chances of achieving positive outcomes for the whole community.
"This is a one-stop-shop which opens the door to a spectrum of high-quality justice services in the heart of the community."
Southern metropolitan regional director Gabrielle Levine said the centre would help people manage fine payments and community correction orders, provide consumer advice and dispute resolution services and offer support for Aboriginal and refugee justice programs.
"We have developed strong relationships with the police, worked closely with the local governments and across various government agencies to ensure there are better outcomes for those in the community who require these services."
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said the centre was a fantastic asset for the community.
"People often visit my office to seek assistance with a number of different issues, from minor disputes between neighbours to consumer affairs matters.
"It is great that residents now have a local service that is easily accessible."
The Southern Metropolitan Justice Service Centre is at 12 Wheeler Street in Berwick.
