Each week, a dedicated team of drivers travel up and down the freeway and respond to the needs of stranded motorists.
For Donvale's Rob O'Dea, a traffic civil response member, it's a job he loves.
"The variation is magic. One shift it's someone stuck in the tunnel, the next it might be clearing debris from the road, or helping remove graffiti. Each day is different."
Mr O'Dea said that while most motorists were happy for the assistance, some felt a little embarrassed.
"A lot of the time people are in the RACV, so we are simply making sure they are parked safe, or if in the tunnels, shunting them out to a safer location.
"I spend plenty of time protecting stranded motorists who are talking on their mobile phones as people tend to wander around."
He said one of the biggest issues that incident response crews faced each day was 'rubberneckers' - the motorists who slow down for a look. "People are inquisitive and want to know what you are doing when we pull up on the side of the road with the flashing lights, but often this causes more problems."
While most call-outs were in response to a flat batteries, tyres, or cars running out of petrol, he has handled some unusual incidents.
"I pulled over one day to find this lady feeding her cat on the front passenger seat, while she put on her makeup. I've also had women breastfeeding on the side of the road, but luckily no births yet!"
